One way to win the favor of the ever-crankier traveling public: Get rid of one of the industry’s most griped-about fees, just like InterContinental Hotels Group is trying to do with its new “Check it Free!” promotion.
With the offer, IHG (which operates Holiday Inn, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge Suites, and Hotel Indigo properties) will pay up to $850 of a guest’s checked baggage fees on any airline September 1 through December 30 – under a few conditions, of course.
To snag the reimbursement, customers need to book two consecutive weekend nights at any one of IHG’s 4,600 properties, pay for the stay with a Visa card, and save baggage fee receipts and flight documentation, to prove that the travel dates matched up with the hotel stay. Each weekend trip is eligible for a $50 rebate (which covers the $25-per-trip baggage fee that many major carriers charge), and guests can claim the rebate as many weekends they’d like while the deal is valid (up to $850 total).
Although $50 is a small rebate in the grand scheme of most hotel stays, this deal certainly generates a bit of goodwill for IHG and eliminates a pesky incidental cost that many travelers overlook before takeoff. Plus, the offer lasts through the holidays, when most travelers could certainly put an extra $50 to good use.
