Bordeaux, the capital of the Aquitaine, is located in the southwest of France. The region is celebrated for great wine, hearty food, magnificent architecture, and sandy beaches. It’s easily accessible from Paris, the Atlantic coast, and the picturesque valleys of the Dordogne and Lot Rivers.
To savor the distinctive art and architecture in town before heading off on the ultimate wine tour through Southwestern France.
The region is home to some spectacular chateaux and resorts. City options are adequate but two new properties – the boutique hotel, La Maison Bord’eaux and the Regent Bordeaux – have taken things up a notch. Travelers with small children should think twice before bringing the little ones along – Bordeaux, for all of its beauty, is not the best destination for families. High-end rooms go for $350+ nightly; budget accommodations can be found for less than $100 per night.

Paula Wolfert, who wrote the definitive American cookbook on Southwest French cuisine, called it “France’s magnificent rustic cuisine.” Hearty dishes like cassoulet, pot-au-feu, and duck confit burst with lusty flavors. Dishes are cooked with and complimented by the region’s robust wines. Just don’t expect to spend less than $30 on a meal – the region isn’t known for its “budget” fare. In fact, it’s not uncommon for dinner to run upwards of $100.
