A colorful past only adds character to Palm Springs’ The Colony Palms Hotel: Founded in 1936 by mobster Al Wertheimer, the property underwent various incarnations as a brothel and gambling house before Robert Howard (grandson of the owner of Sea Biscuit, the champion racehorse) bought the hotel in 1951. Hollywood’s young elite – including Ol’ Blue Eyes – frequented the property for the next quarter century. Today, following a $17-million renovation, the tradition continues with starlets like Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron, and Emma Roberts bedding down in the posh desert digs.

THE VALUE: Rooms typically cost around $250, but the Insider Sale knocks midweek stays down to just $95 a night (weekend reservations cost $149); plus, guests who book this package receive a $25 food and drink credit, $50 to spend at the spa, champagne on arrival, and a VIP card for Cabazon Outlets.

THE CATCH: Blackout dates apply.
