A review of the Hotel Viking in Newport, Rhode Island.

Standing atop the Historic Hill neighborhood in central Newport, Rhode Island, the Hotel Viking is elegant and affordable, and the perfect combination of modernity and timeless class. Essentially, it's what you want in a property when visiting this part of America. Opened in 1926 and named by a town vote for the Nordic settlers of the area, the hotel has undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation that will add a fresh feel to its charming hallways. Here's our review:

THE BASICS

Budget Level: Upscale ($100+ per night)

Lodging Type: Large hotel (208 rooms and 24 suites)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Look

Famous past guests include Ella Fitzgerald and John and Jackie Kennedy – and it’s not hard to see why. The high-ceiling lobby is flush with charming features that include an original 1926 brass letterbox and a fireplace in the lounge area, brightened by windows that overlook Bellevue Avenue. To the left of the lobby sits a modern bar that serves as the entrance to the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, One Bellevue. Standard rooms are the epitome of luxury, with diamond-patterned walls and Egyptian cotton sheets.

The Vibe

With crooners and big band wafting through the speakers in the chandelier-adorned lobby, the hotel surely provides an air of romance; however, plenty of families with young children will also be sighted roaming the halls, as Newport is a favorite for family vacations.

Who Will Love It

For those who want an enchanting, upscale getaway with 20th-century charm, this property is ideal.

Who Might Not

Those who are looking for a romantic experience far away from families with young children, couples may not like sharing the indoor pool with toddlers.

Best Amenity

The Spa Fjör and indoor heated pool are both notable highlights of the property. If visiting in a warmer season, be sure to check out their signature rooftop area, the Top of Newport Bar + Kitchen. This spot opens in the spring and provides unparalleled views of the town. Enjoy a cocktail and fresh seafood while you soak in the sights from what's stamped as the highest viewpoint in Newport.

MONEY MATTERS

Generously sized shower and bathroom toiletries along with maid service, are included.

Fees and Extra Costs You Should Know About

GETTING THERE

In the Neighborhood

Hotel Viking is in a prime location on central Bellevue Avenue. Turn right from the hotel and you're within walking distance to the harbor, plenty of shopping, historic churches, and other landmarks. Still walkable, but slightly more convenient by car are landmarks including the Newport mansions, the Cliff Walk, Easton’s Beach, and Ocean Drive.
