The Gateway Arch, Missouri

Eero Saarinen’s soaring Gateway Arch, which was built in 1965 along the banks of the Mississippi River, is best appreciated at ground level. Non-claustrophobic visitors can also ascend the cement-and-steel structure — the tallest monument in the U.S. — via a tram ride to the top, where, on a clear day, you can admire the Midwest landscape for 30 miles.
