I Spent a Day on Norwegian Cruise Line's Private Island in The Bahamas — Here's What It's Like

by  Sophie-Claire Hoeller | Dec 15, 2023

What do Royal Caribbean, Disney, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Holland America, and Princess all have in common, besides cruise ships? They all have their very own private islands. Private islands have become fashionable in cruising, with all of the aforementioned cruise lines offering these resort-style destinations to their guests. However, if private islands are a trend, then Norwegian is the trendsetter, having called Great Stirrup Cay in The Bahamas its own since 1977, becoming the first cruise line to turn an uninhabited island into a private port. I recently spent a day there — keep scrolling to see what it was like.

Great Stirrup Cay is a 270-acre island that only Norwegian passengers can access.

It’s part of The Bahamas’ Berry Islands, and around 140 miles from Miami. It was briefly renamed Pleasure Island but returned to its original name soon after.
