There’s nothing like a view of the mountains and the scent of trees in the air. While many travelers may be planning to head to Europe’s cities this summer, the continent is also filled with charming and historic mountain towns that are an easy car or train journey from destinations like Paris, Vienna, and Athens. Whether you’re looking to hike, go boating, or simply unwind, Europe boasts some of the most scenic spots in the Alps, Dolomites, and more: Without further ado, here are some of the continent's best, most charming mountain towns.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Located at the foot of the Matterhorn, Zermatt is best known as a winter skiing destination. However, during the warmer months, the town — which is built in a traditional Alpine style — welcomes travelers looking to hike, bike, or just relax. Stroll down the quaint main street, Bahnhofstrasse, to find shops, restaurants, and bars (Brown Cow is an excellent spot for a beer or a burger) before heading up the gondola for exceptional mountain views. Arriving in Zermatt via the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train is an experience in and of itself, so plan your visit accordingly.

Where to Stay: Check into The Omnia, a chic, modern hotel with views of the Matterhorn from its deck and rooms. Visitors will love the well-appointed accommodations, central location, and high-end spa. The impressive breakfast buffet spread is an added bonus.
