Chamonix
Although Chamonix is known as a popular winter destination, the resort town has a lot to offer in the summer. Situated at the base of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, Chamonix is renowned for its hiking and for being a part of the famed Tour du Mont Blanc (one of the most popular long-distance walks in Europe). For those who prefer a little help ascending the peaks, the Aiguille du Midi cable car brings visitors up the slopes, where a glass skywalk showcases the heights in style. The nearby glacier, Mer de Glace, has an ice cave and museum accessible via the Montenvers Railway. The town itself (about an hour from Paris by plane) is charming, luxurious, and filled with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shops to choose from, along with the Musée Alpin Chamonix. Italy is a quick drive, train ride, or hike away, making Chamonix a good choice for those who want to see more of Europe.
Where to Stay: Classic luxury can be found at the historic Hôtel Mont-Blanc, a five-star property with top views and deals to be found outside of ski season.
