Stavanger, Norway

Instead of Stockholm or Oslo, head farther west to Stavanger, a Norwiegan city that is often a port stop for cruises to the fjords. Like Bergen, it’s colorful and filled with history, an apt choice both for city lovers and those looking for a gateway to outdoorsy adventures. Nearby Pulpit Rock welcomes visitors on foot or by boat, while Gamle Stavanger, the city’s old town, is charming and very Instagrammable. There are plenty of museums, including the Stavanger Museum and the Norwegian Printing Museum and Canning Museum, which is far more compelling than it sounds. Stavanger recently became home to a three Michelin-starred restaurant, Re-Naa, an impressive showcase for local seafood.

Where to stay: Elegant, design-led boutique Eilert Smith Hotel, which boasts 12 individually-designed rooms.
